Aqrab is one of the most famous Maliki books in the Maliki world, Its authoritative in the Maliki madhab. We have studied Muqaddima al Izziyah which is lesser known but it’s a good book, the Aqrab al Masalik will go farther into detail regarding all Islamic issues.
The book is mostly drawing from the tahqiq of the writings sheikh ahmed dardir, he is from Egypt and an azhari he was born in 1127-1715 and died in 1201-1786 which means he lived close to the life of George Washington who died in the end of the 18th century. He was a member of the Khalwati tariq which is famous for going into seclusion. They would seclude themselves for a period of time away from the outside world. The khalwati tariqa does still exist and many sufi tarooq practice khawli.
He is from upper Egypt which is also the home of Suyuti, great uelma are from egpyt as you can see. Many arab tribes migrated to upper Egypt and southern Egypt where tribes are still relevant specialy in upper Egypt. His lenigage is traced back to umar khattab but some people dispute this claim.
The father of imam dardair
His father was a righteous man who taught Quran, the childhood of Imam dardir is not spoken about in this book but we assume he was a righteous man who was intelligent and he went to Azhar. He spent his entire life being in and around al Azhar and that is close to where he is buried now. Sheikh Saidi which means upper Egypt shiekh saqaq, sheikh Malawi, sheikh shami deen etc. sheikh hufni and from him he took the khawlati tariqa from him.
Its extremely common for sheikhs to have some connection to a tariqa, being an alim you would be aligned to tariqa even if you were not devout in it. In the western world you would see people in the Freemason org etc as a opposite equivalent. Imam dardir was personally involved in the methods of tariqa and wrote on tassawuf on more than one occasion.
Sheikh dardir was a mulazim of sheikh adawi
Sheikh dardir was a mulazim of sheikh adawi which in religious context refers to deciple or more personal than that which is more of a student of a sheikh who follows him around and lives with him and spends time with him helping him with things and studies.
The students of sheikh dardari is sheikh asawi who is famous in the Malikiyya, the book was finished in 1193, 1750 or so around that including the author of hashiyat dusuqi. Imam juwayni was the teacher of al ghazli who is one of the most famous thinkers. The 4 Imams of the 4 Madhahab are also connected. Imam dardir wrote a commentary on his own book called sharh al Saghir and a bigger book sharh al Kabir on mukhtasar Khalil. Imam dardir was more interested in sufism than most and he wrote a book.
He did not finish writing sharh al Saghir he died half way and his student finished it for him. The tahqiq says this book contains information which aids in giving fatwa and contains the mashur.
A sharh on a sharh is hashiyat dusuqi so we see the progression
